Biggie teams up with Matt Mitchell to win again!

Saturday night April 17 proved to be another wild and crazy night of racing at Ventura Raceway with six adult classes racing around our 1/5 mile bullring. There were 120 competitors signed into the pits for the night.

VRA Sprints once again headlined the night with 30 VRA 360 sprints signed in. Point leader Troy Rutherford won his heat race along with heat race wins by Matt Mitchell, Josh Ford and Justin Kierce.
There was one semi main run with the win going to Cody Kershaw. Joining Kershaw in transfer spots to the feature were Brody Roa, Charlie Butcher and John Nock. The 30 lap feature started with Nic Faas and Gregg Taylor leading the field to the green. The race saw a battle for the lead between several drivers including Taylor, Josh Ford, Brian Camarillo, Troy Rutherford and eventual winner Matt Mitchell, who came from 8th starting position to take his first 2010 VRA win. Dan Gansen drove a great race coming from 9th starting position to finish second, his best ever VRA finish. Finishing third was Kevin Kierce who came from 13th starting position. Troy Rutherford finished fourth followed by Steve Conrad in fifth. Rutherford’s fourth place finish keeps him in the point lead by 45 points over defending VRA Champion Kevin Kierce. There were two flips in the feature on lap 8 when Brent Camarillo and Brody Roa both turned over in turn one in separate incidents. Both drivers were ok but were out of the race.

VRA Senior Sprints were on hand Saturday with 22 cars in the pits. The large car count necessitated a semi main once again. Chris Wakim won the Semi Main with Mark Weitzman, Bill Badger and Mark Chuhaloff moving on to the 20 lap main. The 20 lap feature was a hard fought battle won by 2009 series champion Bruce Douglass. Following him to the line were Rob Kershaw, Ron Bach, Cliff Warren and Mark Weitzman. Heat race wins went to Danny Miller, Douglass and Mike Collins. Douglass’s win keeps him 25 points ahead of Wiley Miller who finished 9th on Saturday.

VRA Sport Compacts raced on Saturday night in a two heat and a main event format. Danny Brown and Trevor Fitzgibbon won the heat races. The 15 lap main event went to Trevor Fitzgibbon who took the lead with a last lap pass over Cody Greiman. Following Fitzgibbon and Greiman across the line were Mike Frazier, Jason Marshall and Jess Carlucci. Fitzgibbon’s win puts him into the point lead by 30 points over Greiman after 3 races.

VRA Go Karts had 19 cars in the pits. Three heat races were run with wins going to Robert DelGaudio, David Pankratz and Ken Ito. The main event got off to a wild start that saw Chad Theobald go end over end bringing out a red flag and sending him to the hospital for a check up. He later returned to the track to let us know he was ok but sore. The main event resumed and saw Richard Renken jump out to a big lead only to crash out with only three laps to go. The win then went to Josh Ford with Tyler Stover Del Gaudio, Sean Scott and Jeff Del Gaudio founding out the top five. After two races in the season series the point lead is held in a three way tie between Jef DelGaudio, Josh Ford and Robert Del Guadio all with 405 points.

IMCA Modifieds were on hand with 19 cars in the pits. Three heat races were run with wins being taken by Rob Green, Damon Redman and Doug Thorton. The main event was scheduled for 20 laps, but due to many incidents that saw seven of the 18 starters out before 2 laps could be completed, was checkered at the ten lap mark. The race took almost 40 minutes to complete the ten laps run, necessitating the early checker.
The win went to Chris Crompe with Joshua Voght, Doug Thornton, Austin Rodarte and Jared Domingos. Austin Rodarte, 2009 series champion, leads the point race with 111 points over Jack Parker who has 104.

The final group racing Saturday night was the California Lightning Sprints. Heat race wins went to Cory Ballard, Dan Hillberg and Bobby Bender. These racers who usually race at Perris Motor Speedway put on a great night of racing. The feature went to Cory Ballard who dominated the race from the start. Following him across the line were Karl VanYokes, Jarrett Kramer, A J Bender and Dan Hilberg.

Next Saturday VRA takes the weekend off so we can run the first motorcycle event of 2010. VRA will be back in action on Saturday May 1.
