CA - May 22, 2010...The USAC Midgets
returned to Ventura Raceway Saturday night May 22
and it proved to be a night of exciting racing that
reminded many of the midget races that made Ventura
famous in the 1990’s. There were 23 full midgets
signed into the pits. Point leader Cory Kruseman and
Jake Swanson led the 23-car field into the 30 lap
main event. Kruseman jumped out front and it
appeared that he would claim the win. He led the
first 27 laps only to see Robby Josett make a bold
move with three laps to go to move into the lead and
take the win with Kruseman close behind in second.
Following Josett and Kruseman across the line were
Josh Ford, Alex Schutte and Johnathon Henry who came
from 17th to finish 5th. There were three heat races
run Saturday with wins going to Kruseman, Troy
Rutherford and Josh Lakatos. Kruseman’s second place
finish keeps him in the USAC Western States Midget
series.
USAC Ford Focus Midgets were on hand to continue
their season. There was one heat race run for the
eight cars singed into the pits. The eight-lap race
went to Nick Carlson. The 20 lap main event began
with Andrew Mulhearn jumping out in front to lead
the first 11 laps. Carlson got by on lap 12 and led
the rest of the way to take the feature win. The
race ran green white checker. Following Carlson to
the line were Mulhearn, Zack Stout, Wally Pankratz
and Jet Davison.
The USAC Young Gun Series, formerly known as Junior
Focus also raced Saturday with their one heat race
win going to Daniel Williams. The 20-lap feature
went to Jarid Blondell who started from the pole
position and was never headed. This race also ran
green white checker. Finishing second through fifth
were Jake Blackhurst, Casey Martinez, Tanner Kershaw
and Daniel Williams.
The only VRA adult class racing Saturday was the VRA
Sport Compacts. Two heat races were run with wins
going to Cody Greiman and Brent Underwood. The 20
lap main event went to point leader Trevor
Fitzgibbon who started outside front row and led all
20 laps to take his fourth win in a row. The race
was red flagged on lap 1 when car number 7 driven by
Cody Greiman flipped in turn four. Greiman was
uninjured but he was unable to continue in the race.
Following Fitzgibbon across the finish line were
Brent Underwood, Mike Frazier, Michaela Stanton and
Jason Marshall.
Our VRA Kid’s Classes also ran last Saturday night.
In Junior Midgets, Brennan Rogers and Devin McCee
took heat race wins. Rogers came back to take the
main as well. In Mini Dwarf Car Super Chargers, Joey
Freshour took the 12 lap feature win. In Mini Dwarf
Pistons the heat race win went to Ryan Butcher. The
12-lap feature went to Logan Rutherford for her
second win in a row.
VRA Sprint Cars return to action next weekend with a
full program that also includes Senior Sprints,
Dwarf Cars, IMCA Modifieds and Go Karts. |
