Ventura
CA - May 29, 2010...2010 has been a
year of streaks set and streaks broken.
The pattern continued last Saturday
night with two streaks broken and new
ones set to begin. On a night when
Ventura Raceway saw six adult classes in
competition fans witnessed some
outstanding racing.
Greg Taylor ended Troy Rutherford’s
short two race win streak with a
powerful win that saw Greg look like the
Greg Taylor of old as he came from his
six place starting position to take his
second win of the 2010 season. The race
saw one red flag as Greg Alexander
flipped in turn one and a small fire was
detected and quickly extinguished.
Taylor’s win came in a race that saw
four different race leaders in the first
twelve laps. Brandon Thomson led laps
1-4 until Josh ford passed him to lead
laps 5-8 and again on lap 11-12. Brent
Camarillo ran another strong race
leading lap 9-10 before crashing in turn
two. Taylor took the lead on lap 13 and
led to the finish. Following Taylor to
the line were Ford, point leader
Rutherford, Derek Buckley and Steve
Conrad. There were four heat races run
on Saturday night. The LRB Manufacturing
Heat Race #1 went to Brent Camarillo,
The Steve Watt Enterprises Heat # 2 went
to Kevin Kierce, the Kaeding Performance
Heat #3 went to Marcus Niemela and the
Fast Undercar Heat #4 went to Greg
Taylor. Niemela’s win in heat three was
the first heat race for him. Ventura
Raceway and all our drivers want to
thank our new contingency sponsors that
have come on board to help out our fine
drivers. There was one semi main run
with the win going to Brian Camarillo in
the ITI Performance Semi. Other
transferring drivers from the semi main
were John Nock, Justin Kierce and Guy
Woodward. Troy Rutherford maintains a
220 point lead over Kevin Kierce after
Kierce had a eleventh place finish.
VRA Senior Sprints returned to action to
see if last race winner Jesse Denome
could get his streak going. It was not
to be as Rob Kershaw took the 15 lap
feature win over past IMCA Sprint Car
Champion Gary Howard who finished
second. 2009 series champion Bruce
Douglass finished third, Russell DeBlauw
was fourth and Denome was fifth. Three
heat races were run with wins going to
Cliff Warren, Jesse Denome and Rob
Kershaw. Rob Kershaw leads the season
points race by 70 over Douglass.
IMCA Modifieds were back again this
weekend with 16 cars in attendance. Two
heat races were run with wins going to
Randy Thornell and Jack Parker. The 20
lap feature was another barnburner with
five different leaders taking their
turns out front. Steve Bulpitt, Dennis
Eckert, Brad Prows, Larry Hood and
eventual winner Damon Redman all lad
laps in the fast paced event. It
appeared that Hood would win the event
but late race traffic on lap 17 played a
part in Redman’s pass that led to his
win and caused Hood to fall to fourth
position. Following Redman across the
line were Randy Thornell, Brad Prows,
Larry Hood and Austin Rodarte, who now
leads Redman by 6 points in the season
point race after 7 races.
VRA Dwarf Cars were in action Saturday
night with the longest win streak on the
line. Angel Figueroa was going for five
wins in a row in Pro Dwarf car action,
but a float tire in early competition
put an end to the streak and run for the
record. He would finish seventh in the
time shortened event. The win went to
2009 series champ Ray Estrada who
finally got his new car running well for
the win. Second through fifth went to
Mike Lewis, Steven Benson, Lee Majors
and Thomas Velasquez. Two heats were run
with wins going to Figueroa and
Velasquez. Figueroa’s seventh place
finish keeps him 210 points ahead of
Steven Benson in the point race. In
Senior Dwarf Car action, past champion
Kevin Alverson took the feature win over
15 other drivers. Following him to the
line were George Calvo, Rick Lapke, Mike
Neal and George Sack Jr. Two heats were
run with wins going to Keith Koslov and
George Calvo. Kent Benson maintains a 15
point lead over Calvo in the point race.
The last group racing Saturday was our
VRA Go Karts. 22 karts signed into the
pits for the night. Three heat races
were run with wins going to David
Pankratz, Chriss Gibb, and Tyler Stover.
A Semi main event was run with the win
going to Ken Ito. The 20 lap feature
went to Richard Renken with Robert
DelGaudio, Pankratz, Jimmy May and Kyle
Park finishing second through fifth.
Ventura Raceway is back in action this
coming Saturday night with a program
featuring VRA Sprints, Dwarf Cars, IMCA
Modifieds, California Lightning Sprints
and our kid’s classes. |
