Greg Alexander wins at Santa Maria
|
The third
and final Grand Slam 360 sprint car race
was run on Saturday August 8th at Santa
Maria Speedway. That night saw 31 of the
top 360 sprint cars in attendance to go
for the $2,000 first place prize.
Drivers from VRA, Bandits and WCS series
all were there to see who would come out
on top at the end of the night.
There four heat races run that night.
Wins went to Johnathon Henry, Greg
Alexander, Chris Wakim and Rick Hendrix.
These and the second thru fourth place
drivers all transferred directly to the
30 lap feature. One fifteen lap semi
main was run with the win going to Davey
Pombo. Also transferring to the feature
were Chris Ennis, Greg Taylor, Brandon
Thomson, Kevin Kierce and Michael Steele
making the starting field 22 cars.
Taylor and firs alternate Hobie Conway
were unable to make the race so second
alternate Bruce Douglass was added to
the field..
The 30 lap feature saw the front row of
Greg Alexander and Rick Hendrix jump out
and lead the early laps. Alexander would
never be headed and take the win in the
Stansberry number 75. Following him
across the line were Danny Faria who
came from 11th place starting position,
Rick Hendrix, Chris Ennis and Chris
Wakim. The race was halted for two hard
crashes that eliminated VRA point leader
Kevin Kierce and series point leader
Johnathon Henry. Henry was running
second on lap 23 and closing on
Alexander when something happened to his
car and it went directly into the first
turn and flipped, bringing out the red
flag. He emerged from the car unhurt,
but his night and series championship
dreams were over. Kierce suffered a
mechanical issue ion the front straight
and was rammed in the rear by another
car. Kierce’s car ended up on the first
turn wall leaning at a sharp angle.
With Henry’s accident in the feature,
Davey Pombo who was running second in
series points and scored a seventh place
finish, moved into the point’s lead and
took the three race series championship
for 2009 by ten points over Henry.
Following Henry were Danny Faria, Troy
Rutherford and Rick Hendrix. |
