How can it
get any better than the racing seen at
Ventura Raceway this season? Once again
Saturday night July 25 proved that short
track dirt track racing at Ventura
Raceway is where it is at for the true
race fan. With over 100 cars in the pits
the fans in attendance saw a night
filled with close hard fought racing in
each of the classes competed.
VRA Sprint action was capped by a great
race for the All Coast Challenge
dollars. With $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000
up for grabs for the top three finishers
the fans knew they would see a great
race, and they were not disappointed.
Season point leader Kevin Kierce was
there to try for another win. He started
inside row five and moved to the second
finishing position. Troy Rutherford and
Steve Conrad battled as well with Troy
Rutherford taking the very popular win
in the 30 lap feature. Remember just
last week he spent time at the hospital
after a very scary hard crash in turn
two. When it was over Kierce was second
a charging Cory Kruseman third, Conrad
fourth and excellent competitor,
visiting driver Danny Faria Jr fifth.
There were four heat races run Saturday
night with wins going to Rutherford,
Kierce, Matt Mitchell and Tyler Edwards.
The 12 lap semi main went to Justin
Kierce. Kevin Kierce’s second place
finish puts him 960 points ahead of new
second place point’s contender Troy
Rutherford after 16 races.
In VRA Senior Sprints, 15 cars signed
into the pits for the night. Two heat
races were run with wins going to Cliff
Warren and Russell DeBlauw. The 20 lap
feature went fast with a new first time
winner taking the glory. Victor Davis
has run hard in the past and finally put
it all together for his first ever VRA
Senior win. Cliff Warren ran a great
race to finish second, followed by point
leader Rob Kershaw, DeBlauw and Jeff
Culver.
Kershaw’s finish puts him 45 points
ahead of Douglass after 9 races.
IMCA Modififeds were there Saturday
night with 19 cars ready to battle for
the nightly glory. When all was said and
done, Greg Tucker took his first ever
IMCA win in the 20 lap feature. He was
followed across the line by Larry Hood,
Jay Bowman, Josh Vogt and Rick Rodarte.
The three heat races went to Bowman,
Tucker and David Mayhew.
VRA Pro Dwarf cars raced Saturday night
as well. Point leader Ray Estrada once
again showed why he is out front in the
point’s race by taking the lead at the
end of the race passing runner-up Steven
Benson to take win number 7 for the
year. Following them across the line
were Curt Cook, Kevin Calvo and Lee
Majors. Heat races went to Jeff
Fillingame, Angel Figueroa and Estrada.
Sport Compacts were back in action after
a break. Front wheel wins went to Joel
Chavez Jr in their heat race and the
main went to Darren Gunnell. Rear wheel
racing saw David Peterson and Cody
Greiman take heat wins. The 15 lap
feature went to season point’s leader
Brent Underwood. Underwood’s win puts
him 225 points ahead of Greiman in the
season point’s race.
The final group racing Saturday night
was our growing Go Kart Division.
Twenty-one karts signed into the pits
for the night’s racing. Heat race wins
went to John Crow and John Wright. The
20 lap feature went to point leader
Chris Gibb.
Ventura Raceway now gets ready for the
annual two night Ventura County Fair
Motorsports events set for August 5 and
6. We return to regular action on August
29 after the Fair has completed its run.
For those of you who need a Sprint Car
fix, VRA Sprints will compete at Santa
Maria Speedway on August 8 in the final
VRA/Bandit Grand Slam Race of 2009. |

How can it
get any better than the racing seen at
Ventura Raceway this season? Once again
Saturday night July 25 proved that short
track dirt track racing at Ventura
Raceway is where it is at for the true
race fan. With over 100 cars in the pits
the fans in attendance saw a night
filled with close hard fought racing in
each of the classes competed.
VRA Sprint action was capped by a great
race for the All Coast Challenge
dollars. With $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000
up for grabs for the top three finishers
the fans knew they would see a great
race, and they were not disappointed.
Season point leader Kevin Kierce was
there to try for another win. He started
inside row five and moved to the second
finishing position. Troy Rutherford and
Steve Conrad battled as well with Troy
Rutherford taking the very popular win
in the 30 lap feature. Remember just
last week he spent time at the hospital
after a very scary hard crash in turn
two. When it was over Kierce was second
a charging Cory Kruseman third, Conrad
fourth and excellent competitor,
visiting driver Danny Faria Jr fifth.
There were four heat races run Saturday
night with wins going to Rutherford,
Kierce, Matt Mitchell and Tyler Edwards.
The 12 lap semi main went to Justin
Kierce. Kevin Kierce’s second place
finish puts him 960 points ahead of new
second place point’s contender Troy
Rutherford after 16 races.
In VRA Senior Sprints, 15 cars signed
into the pits for the night. Two heat
races were run with wins going to Cliff
Warren and Russell DeBlauw. The 20 lap
feature went fast with a new first time
winner taking the glory. Victor Davis
has run hard in the past and finally put
it all together for his first ever VRA
Senior win. Cliff Warren ran a great
race to finish second, followed by point
leader Rob Kershaw, DeBlauw and Jeff
Culver.
Kershaw’s finish puts him 45 points
ahead of Douglass after 9 races.
IMCA Modififeds were there Saturday
night with 19 cars ready to battle for
the nightly glory. When all was said and
done, Greg Tucker took his first ever
IMCA win in the 20 lap feature. He was
followed across the line by Larry Hood,
Jay Bowman, Josh Vogt and Rick Rodarte.
The three heat races went to Bowman,
Tucker and David Mayhew.
VRA Pro Dwarf cars raced Saturday night
as well. Point leader Ray Estrada once
again showed why he is out front in the
point’s race by taking the lead at the
end of the race passing runner-up Steven
Benson to take win number 7 for the
year. Following them across the line
were Curt Cook, Kevin Calvo and Lee
Majors. Heat races went to Jeff
Fillingame, Angel Figueroa and Estrada.
Sport Compacts were back in action after
a break. Front wheel wins went to Joel
Chavez Jr in their heat race and the

Saturday
night July 11, was another exciting
night of open wheel racing at Ventura
Raceway that the fans in attendance will
long remember. It has been said many
times this season, but it just doesn’t
get any better than July 11, which saw
over 100 cars in the pits racing in six
classes ranging from 360 sprints to go
karts. The racing was spectacular with
two of the main events going
green-white-checker. With VRA Sprints,
Senior Sprints, USAC Midgets, USAC Ford
Focus Midgets, USAC Junior Ford Focus
and our new go kart class racing there
was something for everyone in attendance
to enjoy.
VRA Sprints were out in force after last
weeks Fourth of July Holiday break. The
night started out with four heat races.
Wins went to season point’s leader Kevin
Kierce, Tyler Edwards, Brian Camarillo
and up and coming driver Cody Kershaw.
The next race on the sprinters agenda
was their 12 lap semi main, this race
saw 13 cars take the green flag. After
all was said and done, Richard McCormick
took the win. Cory Kruseman and
Johnathon Henry led the 20 car field to
the green for the 30 lap feature. After
the first few laps settled, it was
Kruseman out front being challenged by
Henry. This is the way the race would go
as it ran green-white-checker in a
record time of 6 minutes 42 seconds from
the green flag to the checkered flag. At
the line it was Kruseman, Henry, Kierce,
Brian Camarillo and Cody Kershaw. To saw
the least the race was another barn
burner that has typified the racing on
the new Ventura oval this season.
Krusemans strong performance showed in
the fact that he lapped all but the top
8 finishers in the event. Only one car
fell out of the event during its 30 laps
of racing.
USAC Midget made their third 2009
appearance Saturday night and the midget
fans were not disappointed with the
racing. Heat race wins went to Rick
Hendrix, Jerome Rodella, and Josh
Lakatos, The 30 lap feature was a wild
and woolly affair with Garrett Hansen
taking the win over Josh Ford, Cory
Kruseman, Robby Josett and Shannon
McQueen. The race was halted by red flag
once by a flip in turn one by Ernie
Bartley III on lap 23.
VRA Senior Sprints ran a full program
that featured two heat races that were
won by Bill Badger and 2008 champion Rob
Kershaw. The 20 lap feature saw point’s
contender Bruce Douglass take a strong
win over the 13 car field. This race
also ran green-white-checker in a record
time of 4 minutes and 29 seconds.
Following Douglass across the finish
line were Jeff Culver, Wiley Miller,
Kershaw, and Cliff Warren.
USAC ford Focus racing saw a field of13
cars take the green in their 20 lap
feature. The win went to Nick Carlson
with Sean Dodenhoff, Brody Roa, Bobby
Michnovich and Cody Swanson. Heat race
wins went to Dodenhoff and Michnovich.
USAC Junior Focus 11 cars sign in on
Saturday. Heat race wins went to Kyle
Edwards and Tanner Kershaw. Jarid Blondell made it a history making event
as he took his first ever Junior Focus
win in the 20 lap feature. Following
Blondell across the finish line were
Taylor Ferns, Alex Jacobsen, Dennis
Simunovich and Eathan Quinn.
The Go Karts also were out in strong
numbers as 22 cars raced in this new
division. Three heats were run with wins
going to Harlan Willis, Chriss Gibb and
David Pankratz. Gibb went on to win the
20 lap feature over Bill Didion, Pnkratz,
Scott Bohle and Tom Sherman.

week earlier he won a USAC Sprint Car
race.

Car race, holding off Stockton’s
Johnathon Henry and VRA points leader
Kevin Kierce of Reseda.
The
other winners Saturday included
Ventura’s Bruce Douglass (Senior Sprint
Cars), Jarid Blondel (Orange) in the
USAC Junior Ford Focus Midgets, Nick
Carlson (Norwalk) in the USAC Ford Focus
Midgets, Garrett Hanson (Manhattan
Beach) in the USAC Western Midgets and
