UNDERWOOD WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT AT VENTURA RACEWAY
VENTURA, Calif. (May 9, 2009) – Camarillo teenager Brent Underwood came from behind to win his fifth straight Sport Compact Rear Wheel Drive main event at Ventura Raceway and remained undefeated in 2009.
Underwood, 18, was racing for the lead in his class when he spun about halfway through the 20-lap feature. Forced to go to the rear of the field, he charged back to the front and slipped under Ventura’s Jason Marshall in the final corner of the final lap and won the sprint to the finish line. A late-race caution period set up the final run to the finish.
“I just tried not mess up,” Underwood said. “I went on the bottom. I don’t know how I passed (Marshall).”
The Sport Compact category is split into two different classes, for front and rear wheel drive cars. Santa Paula’s Darren Gunnell, driving in the Front Wheel Drive class, was the overall winner.
The other feature winners at Ventura included track favorite Cory Kruseman (Ventura) in Sprint Cars, Damon Redman (Santa Paula) in the IMCA Modifieds, Ray Estrada (Yucaipa) in the Pro Dwarf Cars, Ed Niedzwiecki (Ventura) in the Senior Dwarf Cars, Cameron Dougan (Camarillo) in Junior Midgets, Zachery Gilmore (Woodland Hills) won the Mini Dwarf-Pistons feature, and Ricky Lewis (Oxnard) won in the Mini Dwarf-Superchargers.
Underwood’s chances for extending his winning streak seemed slim after he spun. He admitted later that, after the spin, his only thought was to make the best of a difficult situation.
“I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to pass as many cars as I can because I need the points,’” said Underwood. It turned out that he passed just enough cars to win his class.
The next race for the Sport Compacts is scheduled for June 6. Underwood downplayed his chances of winning his sixth on the sixth.
“We just try to be consistent,” he said. In his case, remaining consistent would mean winning again.
Kruseman’s Sprint Car win extended a very different streak at the Raceway. No driver has won twice in that class this season.
The event attracted 138 entrants.
