Ventura Raceway ended its 2009 season with a night that the fans in attendance will long remember. The first J. W. Mitchell Fall Classic race presented by ARP was a smashing success. Forty-six of the best USAC Midget racers descended upon Ventura Raceway’s 1/5 mile oval for a night of exciting racing not seen here in many seasons. Drivers from across the nation were on hand to go for the glory and the $5,000 to win first place check. Along with the midget racers, The night also featured the USAC National Dirt Championships for the Ford Focus and Junior Focus racers.

The USAC Midget portion of the night reminded many of the races held here in the early 1990’s when Ventura hosted ESPN’s Saturday and Thursday Night Thunder Series. National Midget point leader Brad Kuhn was there as was Bobby East, Brian Clausen, Tracy Hines, Cole Carter, Josh wise, Chad Boat, Brad Loyet and several other drivers from across the West and the US. They were challenged by the best of the Western States drivers including, Cory Kruseman, Matt Mitchell, Jerome Rodella, Garrett Jansen, Shannon McQueen, Josh Lakatos, Scott Pierovich, Alex Bowman, Johnny Rodridguez, and many others. Many drivers well know to VRA Sprint Car fans also brought out midgets to compete. Brian and Brent Camarillo, Victor Davis, Josh Ford, Rick Hendrix, Blake Miller and 2009 VRA Senior Sprint Champion Bruce Douglass. The night featured a dual heat race format that saw a total of 10 heat races, two semi mains and a 40-lap feature. Round one heat race wins went to Brad Loyet, Alex Schutte, Bobby
East, Tracy Hines and Bryan Clausen. Round two heat wins went to Joseph Fabozzi, Brad Kuhn, Ryan Caplan, Chad Boat and Blake Miller. The top 18 point scorers from the two rounds of heats then moved onto the feature. Semi Main one went to Matt Streeter and Semi Main two went to Kody Swanson.

The forty lap Main event started 24 of the best midgets in the US. The race saw Cory Kruseman and Bryan Clausen start on the front row. Clausen jumped out front early with Kruseman in close pursuit. Kruseman took the lead and led several laps as several top drivers began their move to the front. As the race progressed, Clausen spun in turn four and had to go to the rear. Kruseman fell back as Brad Kuhn moved into the lead. He led the pack to the finish with charging into second place followed by Ryan Kaplan, Kruseman, Brad Loyet, Garrett Hansen, Kody Swanson, Clausen, Shannon McQueen and Alex Schutte rounding out the top ten. The race was a great event and left the fans already looking forward to next year.

USAC Ford Focus Midgets were on hand to crown their 2009 Dirt National Champion. Drivers from California and other states were there to run the 30-lap feature. There were four heat races run with wins going to Gordon Edwards, Cody Kershaw, Andrew Mulhearn and Jet Davison. Then feature was an exciting 30-lap run that saw Andrew Mulhearn take the win and the National Championship. Following him across the line were Cody Swanson, Kershaw, Nick Rossi and Brody Roa.

The USAC Junior Focus ran under a new name Saturday night. Now called USAC Young Guns, the night saw four heat races won by Tanner Kershaw, Casey Martinez, Alex Jacobson and Kershaw came back to take another heat win in the dual race format. The 20-lap feature was a very good race that saw Alex Jacobson that the win and the National Championship. Casey Martinez, Andrew Murray, Dennis Simunovich and Jared Blondell followed him across the finish line.

The night was a very special night as it also saw the return of Sleepy Tripp to Ventura Raceway as the
Grand Marshall of the event. Tripp the all time USAC Midget star was one of the most popular drivers to ever race here at Ventura.

VENTURA, Calif. (Nov. 21, 2009) – Indiana driver Brad Kuhn delivered on a promise and won the ARP presents the J.W. Mitchell Fall Classic for USAC Midgets at Ventura Raceway.

Kuhn said during an interview on national television a week earlier that he planned to race in the Fall Classic at Ventura and win the $5,000 winner’s share of the purse. Saturday he took the lead in time to lead the final eight laps and win the 40-lap Classic.

“I can’t thank the Mitchell family enough,” said Kuhn. “They had a loss when they lost J.W. but they are still around.”

The event honored the memory of the late J.W. Mitchell who suffered fatal injuries in a midget crash nine years ago. Matt Mitchell, J.W.’s nephew, was in the Classic field.

Ventura’s Cory Kruseman started on the pole and led the early going. Bryan Clauson led nine laps in the middle of the race and before Kuhn took over.

Chad Boat (Phoenix) finished second, followed by Ryan Caplan (Chico), Kruseman and Brad Loyet (Sunset Hills, Mo.).

Kuhn told promoter Jim Naylor after the race, “I didn’t know I was on TV,” when he mentioned racing at Ventura. “I thought it was just two guys talking. What does the mention on SPEED pay?”

Whittier’s Andrew Mulhearn won the Ford Focus Midget feature, which was the national championship race for the series, and he joked over the public address system, “I’ve never had a title say national on it, let alone national champion.”

Alex Jacobsen (San Jose) won the USAC Junior Focus Midget race and said, “This is my first win and it came in a big race!”
