MATT MITCHELL WINS
TWO IN A ROW
|
|

Matt
Mitchell along with car owner Steve
"Biggie" Watt and crew. |
Saturday night October 17 was
another night of exciting racing
action at Ventura Raceway as VRA
Sprint Cars, VRA Sport Compacts,
USAC Midgets, Ford Focus Midgets,
Junior Focus Midgets and Go Karts
all competed on Ventura’s 1/5 mile
oval. It was a night that saw some
great racing on a track that was
rough due to the rains earlier in
the week, which almost did not allow
us to race. All the competitors had
to deal with the track conditions as
well as the great drivers who
competed. Over 120 cars were in the
pits Saturday night.
VRA Sprints were on hand with 40
sprint cars signed into the pits.
Led by point leader Kevin Kierce,
the sprint cars ran five heart races
due to the large car count. Wins
went to Bruce Douglass, Steve
Conrad, Matt Mitchell, Greg Taylor
and Jimmy Crawford. Two 10-lap semi
mains were run with wins going to
Clark Templeman III and Danny
Sheridan. Point leader Kevin Kierce
had mechanical problems in the semi
and did not transfer to the feature
causing him to be unable to clinch
the 2009 championship for another
week. The feature started late and
had to be shortened to 20 laps due
to curfew issues. Matt Mitchell
jumped out front from his pole
position spot and blasted around the
track to lead all 20 laps. Greg
Taylor returning to action
challenged all race but was unable
to get by and finished second. The
rough track took its toll on several
cars and drivers. Danny Faria ran to
the front two only to have a problem
with a rut in turn one and had to go
to the back of the field. At the
checker it was Mitchell making it
two wins in a row followed by
Taylor, Brent Camarillo, Steve
Conrad and young charger Chris
Ennis. Point leader Kevin Kierce
continues to be out front in the
race for the championship. He lost
points again to Troy Rutherford, but
still leads him by 475 with two
races to go. All the drivers are
looking forward to next weeks All
Coast Challenge race with its $5,000
to win payday.
USAC Midgets were here with 28 cars
signed into the pits. Four heat
races were held with wins going to
Brad Loyet, Garrett Hansen, Dennis
Howell and Rick Hendrix. The 12-lap
semi main went to R.J.Johnson. The
feature ran 25 laps and was won by
Garrett Hansen from his outside
front row starting position.
Following him across the line were
Loyet, Jerome Rodela, Shannon
McQueen and Matt Mitchell. The
midget drivers will be back in
action at Ventura for the ARP-J.W.
Mitchell race on November 21 here at
Ventura, which will pay $5,000 to
win.
USAC Ford Focus and Junior Ford
Focus Midgets raced Saturday as
well. In Focus Midget action, heat
race wins went to Nick Rossi and
Brody Roa. Their 20-lap feature went
to Cody Swanson with Jake Swanson,
Andrew Muhearn, Gordon Edwards and
Brody Roa following behind. Junior
Focus racers ran two heats with wins
gong to Alex Jacobson and Kyle
Edwards. The 20-lap feature went to
Dennis Simunovich with Casey
Martinez, Eathan Quinn, Nick Drake
and Alex Jacobson following across
the finish line.
VRA Sport Compacts competed in two
classes. Front wheel drive
competition saw their heat race go
to Mike Frazier. Frazier also took
the feature win with Joel Chavez
Sr., Jess Carlucci, Eric Lopez and
Darren Gunnell following. With one
race remaining, Gunnell leads
Carlucci by 140 points and Joel
Chavez Jr. by 175. In rear wheel
drive competition, Brent Underwood
took the feature win and the season
championship. Following him across
the line were Cody Greiman, who ran
a great race and almost had the win.
Trevor Fitzgibbon Brad Long and Bill
Changus finished third through
fifth.
BRA Go-Karts were the final class
racing Saturday night. Heat race
wins went to George Ito and Jimmy
May. The 20-lap feature went to Ken
Ito followed by Robert DelGuadio,
David Pankratz, Kyle Pak and Jimmy
May.

UNDERWOOD
TAKES VENTURA RACEWAY REAR WHEEL TITLE
VENTURA, Calif.
(Oct. 17, 2009) – Camarillo’s Brent
Underwood won a stirring race with Cody
Greiman to grab victory in the Sport
Compact Rear Wheel Drive feature race
and, with it, captured the category’s
2009 championship.
“A win in itself is an accomplishment,
but to win a championship is in a league
of its own,” Underwood said. “I don’t
know what to say.”
Underwood’s win Saturday was his eighth
of the season.
The other feature winners at Ventura
included Santa Paula’s Mike Frazier
(Sport Compact Front Wheel Drive), Yorba
Linda’s Matt Mitchell (Sprint Cars), Ken
Ito of Ventura (Karts), Garrett Hansen
of Manhattan Beach (USAC Midgets), Cody
Swanson of Norco (Ford Focus Midgets)
and Dennis Simunovich of Hollister (USAC
Junior Focus Midgets).
Reseda’s Kevin Kierce did not clinch the
Sprint Car title, though he edged closer
to the crown. Kierce did not transfer
into the main event. Troy Rutherford,
the Ojai flash, is second in the
standings and he finished sixth in
Saturday’s race. Kierce continues to
hold a commanding lead in the points.
Underwood started the feature on the
same row with Greiman, who also lives in
Camarillo. The pair traded the lead
several times during their race before
Underwood pulled ahead for good near the
end of the race.
“It was fast,” Underwood said. “We were
moving. I just kept hitting those ruts.
My car would go flying up in the air.
Then I’d see his car going flying up in
the air. It was anybody’s race.”
In the end, the race and the title went
to Underwood. |
