LINDA’S MITCHELL WINS SPRINT CAR FEATURE
AT VENTURA
|
|

Matt
Mitchell along with car owner Steve
"Biggie" Watt and crew. |
VRA
Sprints were back for another night
of exciting racing last week with a
night of all out racing action. 30
cars signed into the pits for the
night’s action. The night started
with four heat races won by Tyler
Edwards, Brandon Thomson, John Nock
and Brian Camarillo. One 12-lap semi
main event was run with win going to
Danny Faria Jr. The 30 lap feature
was another wild affair, that went
11 laps until point leader Kevin
Kierce and his son Justin got
together in turn four bringing out
the yellow flag. The race continued
with Troy Rutherford, Matt Mitchell,
Brian Camarillo all leading.
Camarillo went out on lap 13. As the
race went on, Rutherford and
Mitchell battled to the checkered
flag with leadership of the race
changing several times until
Mitchell pulled out to a first ever
VRA Sprint car win. Following him
across the line were Rutherford who
closed in on Kierce in the season
point race, Ronnie Case, Brandon
Thomson and Guy Woodward. Kierce
continues to lead the point’s race
by 635 points over Rutherford with
three races remaining. .
VRA Senior Sprints were also back in
action. Saturday the Seniors ran
another great 20 lap race. Bobby
Michnowicz took the win, with Bruce
Douglass finishing second to regain
the season point lead over Rob
Kershaw who finished fifth.
Following Michnowicz and Douglass
across the line were Wiley Miller,
Jeff Culver and Kershaw. Three heats
were run with wins going to Victor
Davis, Badger and Kershaw.
Douglass’s second place finish moved
him into the point lead by 20 10
points over Kershaw in the season
point’s race with on e race left in
the season for this class. These two
drivers have swapped the point’s
lead all season long and this battle
seems destined to go down to the
line as the season winds down. Rick
Hendrix took a wild ride in heat
race number 3. His car flipped high
into the air into the turn three
wall. He was shaken but got out of
the car ok.
Pro Dwarf Cars were back in action
after last week’s race. Two heats
were run with wins going to Angel
Figueroa and Eric Alton. The 18-lap
feature went to point leader Ray
Estrada followed by Mike Lewis, Lee
Majors, Ben Sheen and Glen Barton.
Angel Figueroa who has been battling
Estrada for the championship had
engine failure and finished 18th
dropping him to a 355 point deficit
with two races to go.
Senior Dwarf Cars also were on hand
Saturday night as well. They ran two
heats with the wins going to Ron
Cappodicci and George Calvo. The 20
lap feature ran well with point
leader Bill VanPraag taking the win
followed by George Calvo, Kevin
Alverson, Ed Niedzwiecki and George
Sack Jr. VanPraag leads Alverson by
315 points with two races left in
their season.
NMRA TQ Midgets were back after
their appearance at the Fair event
in August. Heat race wins went to
Chuck West and Anthony Lopicollo.
The 20 lap feature went to West with
West Evans, Kenny Wiley, Scott
Dobson and Richard Ortega JR
following him across the line.
The Jim Kierce Invitational rounded
out the adult racing on Saturday
night. The race in honor of Kevin
Kierce’s dad Jim was run with 14
Senior Sprint drivers going 15 laps.
The race featured drivers who have
supported the series all season
long. The race went to Bill Badger
with Ed Schwarz, Mike Collins, Cliff
Warren and Chris Meredith finishing
second through fifth.
The final classes racing on Saturday
were our three kid’s classes.
Feature wins went to Austin Figueroa
in Junior Midgets, Kyle Peterson in
Mini Dwarf Pistons and Tommy
Velasquez in Mini Dwarf Super
Chargers. Heat race wins went to
Ricky Lewis in Super Chargers,
Peterson in Pistons and Nick
Valenzuela and Brennan Rogers in
Junior Midgets. |
VENTURA, Calif.
(Oct. 3, 2009) – Yorba
Linda’s Matt Mitchell won the race and
Ojai’s Troy Rutherford kept his
flickering championship hopes alive in a
wild Sprint Car feature race at Ventura
Raceway Saturday.
Mitchell led the second half of the
30-lap feature but never pulled away
from Rutherford, who eventually finished
second.
The windy, cool conditions allowed the
track surface to dry and the racing
groove eventually moved so high that
Mitchell and other drivers repeatedly
bounced their right rear tires off
Ventura’s retaining walls. It made for a
thrilling feature race.
The other winners included Bobby
Michnowicz, Torrance (in Senior Sprint
Cars), Ray Estrada, Yucaipa (Pro Dwarf
Cars), Ventura’s Bill Van Praag (Senior
Dwarf Cars), Chuck West, Clovis (NMRA TQ
Midgets), Austin Figueroa, El Segundo
(Junior Midgets), Kyle Peterson, Santa
Clarita (Mini Dwarf-Pistons) and Tommy
Velasquez III (Mini
Dwarf-Superchargers).
Bill Badger, Canyon Country, won the
special Jim Kierce Memorial Super Senior
Invitational race for Senior Sprint Car
drivers.
Rutherford led one lap of the Sprint Car
feature before Mitchell went ahead just
before the halfway point. But
Rutherford’s second place finish trimmed
a significant portion of Kevin Kierce’s
lead in the division standings. Kierce
could have clinched the title by earning
25 points more than Rutherford, but
Kierce finished 19th in the main event
after crashing out. |
