October 31, 2009 Results |
Ventura Raceway’s VRA Racing series
ended on Saturday October 31, with a
night of exciting racing action that
saw racing in five adult classes and
four junior classes. Headlining the
night were the VRA Sprint Cars who
signed into the pits with 28
entries. With Kevin Kierce taking
the 2009 series championship at the
last race the night was a night for
the other competitors to try to
score as many points and move up in
the final placings leading up to the
2009 awards banquet. There were four
heat races run with wins going to
Troy Rutherford, Dakota Kershaw,
Ronnie Case and visiting USAC/CRA
driver Mike Spencer. One semi main
was run with the win going to John
Nock. The 30-lap feature was a wild
and woolly affair that saw many cars
leave the race due to several
incidents and mechanical issues. In
the end, half of the starting field
fell out before the checkered flag
fell. The actual race was dominated
by returning driver Henry Clarke who
has been in the Midwest running USAC
this season. He put the Steve Watt
number 69 out front and was never
headed. The race was for second back
and it was a great battle between
Troy Rutherford, Ronnie Case, Steve
Conrad and eventual second place
finisher Brandon Thnomson. Visiting
driver Mike Spencer finished sixth.
It was a fitting finish to a great
2009 season for VRA Sprints that saw
14 different drivers take feature
wins in 25 events. 87 different
drivers took the green flag in 2009
in a series that continues to grow
and provide great racing for its
fans and drivers. With those kind of
numbers it bodes well for another
great season in 2010.
VRA Senior Sprints also ended their
2009 season with a points battle
that went down to the last lap of
the final 20 lap feature. Bobby
Michnowicz took the feature win but
the real battle was for second and
third place. Bruce Douglass entered
the race with a 15-point lead over
2008 series champion Rob Kershaw.
When the checkered flew, Douglass
placed second with Kershaw nipping
at his rear bumper in third. Had
Kershaw passed Douglass the series
would have ended in a tie. There
were 24 Senior Sprints signed into
the pits Saturday and three heats
were run. Wins went to Michnowicz,
Gil Mahoney and Kershaw. Douglass’s
popular season point’s win is his
first VRA Championship. 2009 saw 42
seniors compete in 14 events.
Season championships were concluded
last week for the VRA Dwarf Cars but
they were back again for their
season finale on Saturday night.
Season point’s champions Bill Van
Praag in Seniors and Ray Estrada in
Pros both ended the year with
another win to their credit.
Estrada’s win was his 12 win of the
season a VRA record. Heat race wins
went to Steven Benson and Estrada in
the pros and VanPraag and Mike Neal
in Seniors.
In VRA Go Kart action, Ken Ito took
another win but David Pankratz took
the series championship in the final
race for the karts in their
inaugural season. Heat race wins
went to John Wright and George Ito.
USAC/VRA Junior Ford Focus Midgets
raced Saturday night with the
feature win going to Dennis
Simunovich. Kyle Edwards finished
third and took the VRA portion of
the Junior Focus series. These
racers will be back to compete one
more time on November 21 as a part
of the ARP/J.W. Mitchell Fall
Classic for USAC Midgets and Ford
Focus Midgets.
The final group racing Saturday were
our three kid’s classes. Season
championships went to Austin
Figueroa in Junior Midgets, Ricky
Lewis in Mini Dwarf Super Chargers
and Joe Snyder in Mini Dwarf
Pistons. Race nigh wins went to
Brennan Rogers in Junior Midgets,
Snyder in Pistons and Tommy
Velasquez in Super Chargers.
With our VRA season now concluded we
are getting ready for our final 2009
event set for November 21,The USAC
ARP/J.W. Mitchell Fall Classic. If
you like open wheel racing you need
to make plans to be there for a
great event. |
