RUTHERFORD WINS TWO IN A ROW
|
|

Troy
Rutherford and crew |
Well
it had to happen! A night that most
of us would rather not think about.
Scattered about a night filled with
several bad crashes, red flags, wild
driving, there was some excellent
competition. It was a night filled
with fog an cool weather as well.
VRA Sprints were in the pits with 28
cars signed in. All the top drivers
were there for a night that proved
to be a memorable one if not for the
great racing, but for a shortened
main event that saw what many race
fans will come to call Ventura’s Big
One! There were four heat races run
with wins going to Steve Conrad,
Brandon Thomson, Troy Rutherford and
Josh Ford. The feature started off
well with seven laps complete before
the first yellow flew for an
incident on the track. After the
restart, Troy Rutherford jumped out
front and remained three as
competitors tried to catch him. On
lap 19 with the fog closing in, nine
cars became involved in a turn three
incident that saw at least five cars
flip. The big one claimed many top
runners including Josh Ford,
Johnathon Henry, Matt Mitchell,
Tyler Edwards, John Nock, Steve
Conrad, Brent Camarillo, Brandon
Thomson and Guy Woodward. Both
Edwards and Henry were shaken and
attended to by raceway and ambulance
crew. Fortunately the drivers were
ok and emerged from their cars after
a lengthy period. The same could not
be said for their cars that were
damaged heavily along with several
other heavily damaged cars. Due to
time restraints the race was
checkered and the win went to Troy
Rutherford, with point leader Kevin
Kierce seconds, Ronnie Case third,
Brian Camarillo fourth and Chris
Wakim fifth. The early ending of the
race was the first time in memory
that a VRA Sprint race ended with
less than 30 laps complete.
IMCA Modifieds were on hand with 28
cars in the pits necessitating a
rare semi main, which went to Robert
Claborn. Four heats were run with
wins going to Randy McGraw, Dave
Clark, Greg Tucker and Jay Bowman.
The 20-lap feature was a wild one
with several early incidents. One
involved the 76 car of Jay Bowman
who flipped hard in turn four
severely damaging his racer.
Fortunately Bowman emerged from the
wrecked racer uninjured. The race
resumed ant at the end it was Randy
McGraw taking the win for his third
in a row. Second through fifth went
to Danny Lauer, Dave Clark, Frank
Nyback and New IMCA Ventura Track
Champion Austin Rodarte who clinched
his first championship by starting
the main event.
VRA Dwarf Cars were in attendance in
two classes, seniors and pros. In
Senior competition, heat race wins
went to Kevin Alverson and Rick
Lapke. The 20-lap feature went to
season point’s leader Bill VanPraag,
with Alverson, Mike Neal Mark Davis
and Bobby Lague rounding out the top
five. In Pros, point leader Ray
Estrada took another win to increase
his point lead for the year. Heat
race wins went to Angel Figueroa and
Brian Saxton. Estrada’s win in the
shortened main puts him235 points
ahead of Figueroa in the season
point race in Pros. Folowing Estrada
across the line in the feature were
Lee Majors, Brian Saxton,Thomas
Velasquez and Ben Sheen.
VRA Sport Compacts raced in two
classes front wheel drive and rear
wheel drive. Wins in the feature
went to Trevor Fitzgibbon in rear
wheel drive and Joel Chavez Jr in
front wheel drive. Heat race wins
went to Fitzgibbon and David
Peterson in rear wheel drive and
Joel Chavez Sr in front wheel drive.
USAC Junior Ford focus racers were
also on tap Saturday night. Two heat
races were run with wins going to
Casey Martinez and Kyle Edwards. The
20-lap feature went to Dennis
Simunovich with Martinez, Edwards,
Andrew Murray and Nick Drake
following him to the checkered flag.
VRA Go Karts raed as well Saturday
night with 18 karts in attendance.
It was a wild and woolly affair with
bumper car like racing throughout
the field. In the end, the feature
went to point leader David Pankratz.
Heat race wins went to Harlan
Willis, Richard Renken and Pankratz.
The final group racing Saturday
night was our kid’s classes. Wins
went to first time winner Joey
Freshour in Superchargers, Joe
Snyder in Pistons and Austin
Figueroa in Junior Midgets. |
