Troy Rutherford won the
battle, but Greg Taylor won the war
Troy Rutherford won the battle, but Greg Taylor won the war
as the final VRA/Bandit Grand Slam Series Race of 2007 took
place last Saturday night October 27. As Rutherford took his
fourth win in the last five Ventura Raceway events, Taylor
clinched his first Grand Slam Series Championship with a
third place finish in the thirty lap feature. Josh Ford
finished second in the race and second in the series 14
points behind Taylor. Johnathon Henry finished fourth in the
feature and third in the series. 2007 Bandit Jesse Mack had
a bad night Saturday when a rock knocked a fitting off his
brake line and he went out on lap 2. He finished the series
in fourth in points due to excellent finished in earlier
competition at Bakersfield and Santa Maria.
Saturday’s event was another great race night with heat wins
going to Luis Espinoza, Kevin Kierce, Jesse Mack and Greg
Taylor. Derek Buckley took the win in the 12 lap Semi Main.
With the threat of rain all around the raceway, the races
were lined up by regular VRA Pill Pick format rather than by
qualifications. This allowed us to get the entire race in,
in a more timely fashion. The 30 lap feature was a race that
saw Troy Rutherford once again go to the front to take the
win. Several early yellow flags took out some competitors in
the first 9 laps. Once the race got rolling in a clean
manner, Rutherford led a hard charging Josh Ford, who came
from 9th to 2nd across the finish line. Finishing third
through fifth were Taylor, Henry and Luis Espinoza. Taylor’s
third place finish gives him a 500 point lead over Kevin
Kierce going into the final two events of the year. He only
needs to score 25 points on November 10, to clinch his
first VRA Championship
